The first thing that your mom should remember. Just handinig out money is only asking for a problem later. Have your mom find out what they need help with and then have your mom point them in the right direction or get those people in touch with others that deal with those issues.

Example: Their car is broken down - Your mom knows someone from church that likes to work on cars. Have your mom call this person to contact the other person to arrange a time to look at it.

Buy her a gift certificate and present it to her before the holiday from the local grocery store, so she can purchase enough food to feed her family. Or go to a local store and purchase a gift certificate so she can purchase gifts for her children or simply buy some gifts and food and deliver it to her. Or give her a card with some cash... I am sure if she is that bad off, she would be grateful of anything... Maybe pay a electric or heating bill for her for the month... Simply the thought! God bless****

Contact your local United Way chapter and they can also help with food, clothing. Better yet,if your mom wants to donate something to the family,United Way can get a church to make the donation for her so there's no embarassment.

Get a gift certificate for the local grocery store so they can have a good Christmas meal. Or a gift car to a local store. That way she can choose what she needs and wants.

Just hand her a Christmas card with the gift cards inside and she won't need to feel embarrassed about receiving a gift.

Your mother has a beautifyl spirit and you should be very proud of her. If you email me directly, I can find some social services in your area that might help this lady in the future to get long term help.

how about a food hamper? invite them for xmas dinner, an other "events" over xmas... there are so many things to do.. i would personally go to my friends an see if they had bedding, clothes, anything of use-that can be expensive-that they want to throw out.. then hand it over as a donation to the family.. the thing your mum needs to think about is that although some people struggle, they would be offended if they were given donations.. i hope your mum can sort out something for this family.... have a fantastic xmas!!

a local church---just ask.
Ask the police dept. I'm serious. They know who to tell you to turn to.
SOME churches will step in--like with a food closet--or she can bring up the family at a women's group and see if they want to sponsor this family with Christmas.

Foregoing your OWN Christmas would help.
You would feel WONDERFUL!!!

one thing she can do is join your local freecycle. People offer things for free that they want to get rid of, from furniture to clothing. Have her check it out.
Its through yahoo groups

Give them some books to read.
