Personally, i'll take the XT.
I like shimano's low normal design and the new shadow.
If you do XC, low normal will be a good choice.
The 1:1 ratio does'nt make much difference to me.

I tried the older XT shifter before.
Shifting is quick and i need to push only abit.
Very confortable to me.

Or another choice is the XT DCL. Dual control lever.
You can shift by pushing the brake lever up or down.
The best invention for mountain bike shifting ever! (in my opinion) Shifting can be simpler than ever.
But it will take time to get used to it.

So, my vote goes to XT. Mainly because of the low-normal design. I prefer low-normal to top-normal.

My current bike is equipped with high normal XT gear. I find when the chain is clean, the derailleur is perfectly adjusted and I let up just slightly as I shift, it is silky smooth.

Unfortunately, this is a mountain bike. The chain never stays clean for more than a few miles and if I get caught going up a hill, the last thing I want to do is let up and lose momentum. Thus, under most circumstances shifting, especially to a lower gear is rarely sweet.

I may try a low normal Shimano derailleur in order to avoid having to buy new shifters, but if money were no object, I'd immediately switch over to SRAM gear. In my experience, SRAM always shifts. No matter how coated in crud and how much pressure you have on the pedals it up and down shift flawlessly.

Hope this helps.

Being in the business, I have started to move away from XT in favor or X-9. The shifting feels more solid (for roadies- more Campy like) and the "industrial" look is more attractive to me.

Unless you race, the instant release can be a drag, and the Shadow design- although pretty cool- is only useful if you do some pretty technical riding and tend to bash rear derailleurs. The removable gear display means nothing to most people after they have ridden for about a week so that feature is, well, meaningless except to the marketing guys.

Actually, I think that the shadow is top-normal, not low-normal.

People that have ridden both prefer SRAM over Shimano for the same level components.

I have XT and I really like it. But I just think that SRAM x.9 is a bit better.

well the price comes to mind. i would get the xt since i do not believe that the 1:1 actuation ratio is all that. i'd use the savings on other upgrades. besides the shadow rd looks bad @ss.
