does the brand of hdmi cable matter. I'm thinking about getting the one on amazon for like $3. I know there are so many more expensive ones though not really sure

Because the signals are digital - the price or quality of the cable tends to not matter.

The only thing to watch for are cables over about 15 feet. You need slightly different cables (thicker wires & insulation) for longer runs.

The signal in HDMI is digital so the short answer is no it doesn't matter, however, the long answer is yes, if your running 1080P programming over a longer cheap cable you will get lost data and thats a problem, but for short cables and upto 1080i any HDMI v1.3 cable will do fine
