Can I just use regular raw salmon from my local supermarket? Is there any way to sanitize it on your own?

I'd say buy it from an Asian or Mexican market because they normally won't freeze fish like most regular markets do. However, I agree with my buddy Christopher K is so true about learning to make sushi. A few years ago my ex-husband and I tried to make sushi and even bought books about it, but it didn't turn out to be such a great idea after all. You have to go to sushi school in order to be a master of rolling. It's expensive & it requires too much energy.
My boss' son is a professional sushi chef and he had to go to sushi school for several years. According to him sushi is not an easy task.
There is always something simple like sashimi instead of the sushi, but you still need the same ingredients and the special sushi rice for it though.
In the end, you'll find eating out is less expensive than to make your own, but don't let intimmidate you either!.
Let us know how it turned out ;)

at your local super market, just be sure the fish is fresh. When you add the rice vinegar or sushi su it should prevent growth of bacteria. But if you want to be extra safe you can go out and catch your own salmon, have a little fun ;) . i get my salmon from the supermarket and it works fine for sushi, but i think fresh caught salmon tastes and works best.

Do you have an Asian Seafood market in your area?

There is a web site that lists seafood and respective distributors on the west coast. Try to play around on Google.

I wouldn't use supermarket fish for sushi!

do you have any Idea the handeling process of any "raw' meat..???
OK much of the fish industry is in frozen products.. even at sea..
so how close to the ports are you.. Fresh is welll ?? can you see the boat..
Now for the quality of such fish meat.. I would say most fish is ready for sushi or sashimi from an active market
In my city ?? only If I prepared it today....
I do NOT have a fear of bugs or bacteria and that nonsense..
but selecting from previously frozen unless it is still hard..

I would recommend that you get the freshest fish, preferably from an Asian Seafood Shop, as their turn around time on the fish is very fast, so you'll find the freshest catch there.....

I don't know if you've ever attempted to make sushi, as a professionally trained chef, even I shy away from it and would rather go out for it......If you've never done it before, I think you're getting in over your head.....I know, sushi sounds easy to make in theory, but sushi chefs have to study for a minimum of 12 years in Japan before they can work as sushi chefs.......(yes twelve years, as long as we send our doctors to school in this country) ........Good luck........

No, supermarket fish may contain parasites and bacteria. You should buy fish that was specifically treated so that they can be eaten raw.
