Today is just her 3rd day home from the vets, she is taking 6 tablets of Florinef 0.1mg daily and also 1 tablet of Prednisolone 5mg daily. Today she has been drinking a pint of water every 3 to 4 hours. She used to drink upto 1 pint of water a day. This is a huge increase.

The three most common possiblities for an addisonian to be drinking like a fish (and I bet peeing a river too). The first two OVERDOSE of florineif OR UNDERDOSE of florineif . Your dog is getting the standard starting dose for a 60 lb dog but it's not unknown for a dog to need 3-4x that amount. The next is too much predisolone - she's on a fairly stiff (but not absurdly high) dose of pred for a 50-60 lbs dog but many dogs NEED extra during the early stages of treatment.
First: CALL YOUR VET. You can distingush between the 3 causes by a blood test of the Sodium & Potassium - if the florienif is too low the Sodium will be low & the Potassium high and the ratio of Sodium/Potassium low (less than 30) If its too high the opposite will apply. If the ratio is textbook perfect look sharp at the pred- at least one treatment senerio depends on waiting for overdose symptoms (which excess drinking is one) before lowering the pred dose - so keeping a stiff upper lip could be a mistake. PS ocasionally a borderline ratio will cause a dog to show too high or low symptoms - treat as too high/low for that dog.
Second: Join either of the addison dogs support lists home pages www. k9addisons.com and www.addisondogs.com
there are literally 1,000 owners there to share helps, discount drug sources, vet referals and just plain provide a shoulder to cry on (or celebrate with) Most of the time SOMEONE will have seen any problem before and can share what helped them and there are knowlageable folks that can give you the latest research studies too.

PS keep a diary of symptoms, blookwork results ect. since you have only one dog to keep track of you may spot a trend before your vet

Ant dog which has started that kind of medication, will probably drink more,as they maaybe slightly dehydating them!!Keep an I if it carrys on for more that a couple of days that contact your vet!!!
I would like to say ,im so glad that they caught the disease in time to give her medication. We had a 2 yr old Jackrussell that went from being a lively ,hyper dog to in a space of a day went really ill and limp!!We took him straight to the vets and he was there for 3 days, they were doing all tests and could not find out what was wrong with him.
That 3rd night he passed away and it wasn't until the next day
when another set of results came in,that he had Addisons dease I it hit so quick with out any ymptons it was devastating! You are very lucky to have a Vets that picked it up straight away!!!Good luck and hope she gets on well!!

Personally, I wouldn't guess at it, but would call the vet and ask... We don't know your dog's weight and that is what intake is predicated on. The meds will make her want to drink more but she still shouldn't overdo it and anytime you see a 'huge' change in anything, you need to rethink it. I personally would think if a dog normally drank a pint a day that an increase to 6-8 pints a day is a problem and I wouldn't allow that increase to occur but would check with the vet to see exactly what sort of an increase I should allow given the dog's condition/meds. We can't know that in any way, shape or form so I wouldn't go by what anyone on the internet on YA! wants to guess. Good luck.

Prednisone will cause an increase in water and food intake, and they will need to go to the bathroom more frequently.

If you're so concerned, ask a Vet - but these are the side effects of Pred.

I'm sorry that your pup has Addison's.

Dogs and humans on Prednisolone will drink lots of water. Make sure you take her out enough and make sure she has all the water she wants to drink, it is good for her and very normal.

It is the pred. this will give her cotton mouth. just give her as much water as she wants and take her out to potty as often as possible. she might not act like she wants to go but she should be allowed if she wants.

i would just leave water out for her to drink when she wants it. make sure it stays full and she will be fine.
