For example, if one believes the meaning of life is love regardless of the worship of a deity isn't that a faith and therefore a religion?

So would that also mean atheism is the same as believing what one does in life is meaningless?

Not in a literal sense. Believing in a meaning could be considered 'spirituality without religion'. Religion comes when that meaning is discussed, agreed upon, and then has actions, forms and rules codified as a method of transmission for that system of belief.

Well believing in a meaning of life is part of what makes faith. Rules, guidelines, belief in a creator, belief in a purpose or meaning for life, belief in not fearing anything or anyone besides THE CREATOR, and worshipping our CREATOR, makes what we call faith.

hi holly-dont think so-now if along with believing that the meaning of life is love you then start to worship love then you have a religion-ditto for the atheist-if one would start to worship the non-existenced of god then it to would be a religion for that person-do see how one could do that-but will admit that someone might----just my thoughts-smile and enjoy the day--cool question

So you're saying that Atheists do not love? How sad your life must be to believe that only your group is Human.

Life is meaningless only if you don't care living.

if by "meaningless" you mean that life is worthless without some invisible sky fairy directing and controlling my life, well, yes, then my life is meaningless.

if you refer to whether my life can have a purpose (self-defined), then I would say my life has more meaning than that of a believer. Way more.

Religions are used to sift, refine, and purify, man!

Religions have been given to humans as a form of ladder, to further ones understanding of mans relationship with the "Creative Force" responsible for this wonder called "Life".
Humans must over time understand the factors that are "unseen or unknown" which influence the factors that are "seen or known".
Religions are but tools for man to gain "Wisdom" into mans true nature. Man will sooner or later understand what this true nature is!
When "Wisdom" dawns within man this ladder (religions) can be set aside, and they all will be accepted as "Truth".
A "Man of Wisdom" will then respect all religions with compassion and understanding. A "Man of Wisdom" reaches out to people of all religions, faiths, and spiritual paths, because he sees no differences, or faults within them.

*When each human being becomes aware of their true-self (true-nature) the essence or meaning of "Life" becomes instantly realized or perfectly clear!

"May we all gain Wisdom within our lives."
"Peace be always with you."

Atheists have faith in the science of man. They trust that we are so smart that we have all the answers to the universe. They have such great faith in it that they defend it by trying to convince others who see man as not quite so significant that we are wrong. They call it knowledge, I call it Ego.

Depends entirely on where you think that meaning came from. If you think it came from a deity, then it is a religion. Atheists are free to make up their own.

I believe I make my own meaning in my life.

Does that mean I worship myself? No. You can play with semantics all you like, but an atheist is simply someone who does not believe in the existence of any deities.

That's it.

It's a belief, and if one enforces rules on himself or herself you could say that it's a personal religion.

So you could say that to me my personal mindset towards understanding everything and the capability to be totally honest with myself is something of a personal religion.

Part of this is understanding why people fail to understand me.

:D
