I'm 26 and I have tonsillitis. I get it really bad about 4 times a year. I have it now. Its viral so I can't take antibiotics. The pain is excruciating. I take motrin and tylenol but they don't touch the pain. I drink hot drinks and eat ice cream. Nothing helps. Do you have any remedies for the pain? Thanks. I have an 8 month old too I have to take care of and can't be sick. Sometimes I'm sick for up to 2 or three months. HELP!

Here's a website with "home cures" for tonsillitis.

You also should consider having your tonsils taken out - especially if you're getting tonsillitis 4 times a year. It's not a difficult surgery (you go home the same day) and you have a few days recovery at home eating ice cream and pudding and that's about it - then you never have to deal with tonsillitis again.

I think you need to go see an ENT doctor. I am 32, and just had my tonsils out, after having strep throat 3 times in a 6 week time period. The younger you are, the faster you will heal. I was in a lot of pain for 2 full weeks, and now, I feel better than I have ever felt in a real long time.

Vicodin(hydrocodone) or oxycodone helps with the pain, but you need to see the ENT, to get meds.

Good luck, and trust me I know what you are going through. When I had my tonsils out, my husband had to go out of town a few days after they were removed, and was gone 4 weeks. and we have two small kids, and my youngest had a bad seizure. Yikes!

There are a few medications in drug stores that you could try. One is a spray - I think the brand is Chloraseptic but not sure, and the other is in the form of tablets to suck on (just make sure you're getting the ones for sore throat not just cough lozenges). They are on the shelves where cold medication is. They contain some analgesic. Also, perhaps there is some prescription spray stuff that your doctor could give you?
