Hemophilia is an x-linked recessive disease. This means it tends to affect males, as females have a second (usually protective) x-chromosome.

About 18,000 people in the United States have haemophilia. Each year, about 400 babies are born with the disorder. Haemophilia usually occurs in males and less often in females.1 in 5,000 males are affected

The disease occurs due to a lack of clotting factor VIII - coded for by the gene on the X-chromosome.

It is genetic and occurs from birth.
