Flying... I was an aircrewman / rescue-swimmer in the SH-60B Seahawk for 75% of my career, and I LOVED being out at sea and flying...
Cloud-chasing, Sunrises and Sunsets, visually ID'ing various boats and ships, delivering the mail, shadowing dolphin pods... even "mooning" the occassional Soviet Destroyer. I left with just under 4000 hours of flight time in the 60.
The second best would be the travel

My father was in the Marine Corps. I remember growing and thinking, wow, my dad is awesome. He is in charge of all these badasses, and they all look up to him. Also, I was amazed that wherever we went, he had a friend there. Didn't matter what state, or what country.
Now that I'm grown and in the military myself, like the first poster, its kind of amusing to hear about those kids that you went to high school with and then to compare it to what you've done.
I used to be a real girly girl, and I still am, but being able to prove what I'm capable of is just such a rush. There have been times where I've outperformed males who though they were high-speed and cool, only to be outdone but a 5'5", 130lb female with filed nails and no splitends.
I'm only twenty two, but I've met the Presdient twice, I've seen what the military is capable of, I've dined with generals and all that bs, and I've been out in the field and loved every minute of it.
I'm not stuck back in my hometown, knocked up and trying to make ends meet with a deadbeat husband.
Hell no.

Driving a fifty knot, 7.5 metre, 350 HP water jet driven RIB. Immaculate handling and bloody great fun to drive. It's the only thing I miss about being in the Navy.
Serving your country? Don't be daft. Most people in the military are only in it because it's a better life than they'd get at home, and I was only in because I was getting a decent wage.

Well I am not an American solider, so my answer maybe a bit... different.
Waking up in the morning, driving to Tim Horton's, and having a little kid walk up to me and just grin from ear to ear... run off to her parents and say ... She's a solider mommy! Look mommy!
You don't forget the small things, especially what your fighting for.
The people you met, and get to know, become like an extended family. You can call on at O-Dark-Stupid for help.
Also, side note... Machine Guns ROCK! :D I hate cleaning them, but man... nothing like it ... just firing boxes down range, hands freezing to the trigger due to the freezing cold.... the smell of the gun oil and the light ching of the chains falling...

military life is so different from the civilian world. in my experience, the friends you make in the military are 'real' friends. they know what life is like, they always are there for you, they have been through deployments, homecomings, and everything that goes along with military life, good and bad.
being so proud of my husband for all of his sacrifices. knowing that we are a better family and dont argue over petty things and to not take things for granted.

The Comradeship, and the sense of mission fulfillment. After a mission was completed and you were returning home, there just was nothing like a job well done.

Tank Gunnery! It's the only activity a human can have that's more fun than sex. I can't believe the Army paid me to have so much fun.
