This is what www.ancestry.com had to say about the name,
Donna
English and Scottish: of recent origin (not found before the 1920s). It seems to be taken from the Italian word donna lady (cf. Madonna), but it has often been used as a feminine form of Donald.
hope this helps.

Donna is the Italian word for woman, but originally it meant only lady, like Spanish dona and French dame. It comes from the Latin domina. Although it's sometimes used as a feminine form of Donald, the two names are unrelated.
