We need to do something to stop using fossil fuels in the long term. These can be replaced by wind, solar, tidal and bio-fuels.
The compromise is to focus on energy efficiency in the short term.. There a lot of simple things that can be done to lower the amount of energy used in our homes and businesses and reduce the amount of fuel used in our cars. In our homes, simply items like adding better quality window shades in warm regions and better basement insulation in cold regions helps a lot. For our cars, for starters, unless you are a forest ranger you do not need an SUV, but also little things like keeps your tires inflated adds 10% fuel efficiency.
Nuclear is not the way to go. We still do not have a means of handling the used fuel which will remain radioactive for thousands of years.

Conflicts and compromise in the environment depends on the election coming, who is running, which news paper chooses to take the torch and most of all who is going to make the most money. Why do you think corn is the prime source of ethanol. Not because it is the best and the most abundant.
Ever hear of Future-Gen. 99% polution free, "the future of electrical generation". Sounds good? TX and IL think so. They are pledging millions. The Feds pledged alot of our tax dollars, investors flocked, the locals rallied. Now it may not happen? Negitive Environmental impact study? No.Technology incorrect? No. So what is the reason for not building a 99% polution free power genation plant.
Because it will cost to much!
Conflict or compromise???

There is no such thing as a compromise on the environment. Either you go for it or not. Compromises get what you got now. Nothing.
How about STOP playing around with the environment to suit owr needs. Let nature take it's natural course. It doesn't need our bumbling help,it does amagnificant job on it's own and doesn't create more problems on the way.

Conflict - CAFE standards to raise fuel consumption gave birth to the SUV market actually reducing overall fuel economy.
Compromises - Government needs to step back and let the free market fix the problem. Too often well intentioned government laws just exacerbate the problem.
Nuclear power need to be a part of our energy plan for the next 1000 years. Nothing can produce so much energy 24/7/365 while producing a minimal amount of waste.

We need to stop using fossil fuels, for many reasons.
One way (maybe a necessary way) is to use nuclear power plants, which have some environmental drawbacks.
This has sparked conflict in the environmental community between those who see nuclear as necessary to fight a much larger risk (I'm in that group) and those who oppose nuclear power at all cost.
My idea of a compromise is to use nuclear for the transition period (30-50 years) and replace nuclear with improved wind and solar as the nuclear plants wear out.
