It's called an E-collar. It keeps the dog from chewing at incisions or abrasions if it's been injured or has had surgery.

The Elizabethan collar is used after a dog has had surgery. As the wound heals, the skin itches (just like humans' wounds) so the dog licks and bites at it. The collar prevents the dog from ripping out stitches and reopening incisions. Just think how people sometimes pick at scabs and imperfections of the skin--the dog would try the same thing with its mouth. By keeping the wound out of reach, it heals faster and stays clean.

The E-collar is to prevent the dog from chewing at stitches, skin staples from surgery, wound dressings, casts, bandages... just about anything! It also prevents them from scratching healing incisions or wounds on the face or ears...

Without it, they can cause huge problems...

I am a vet and I will not go into the consequences that I've seen first hand when the collars come off before the animals are healed...!

It's an E-collar. E- short for Ellizabethan collar. They are to prevent the dog from reaching an area that needs to be left alone for example if the dog has undergone surgery often times they will lick the incision causing infection. Hope this answers your question.

It's an e-collar (elizabethan collar...you know, like queen elizabeth used to wear that lace up to her face.)

It's used usually after a surgery or anytime a dog needs to leave an area of his body alone....for example, so he does not pull his stitches out.

When a dog has the "satellite dish" collar on, it is because he or she is being restricted in movement as to not disturb sutures, incisions, or rashes. It keeps dogs from licking or chewing areas that need to heal.
