companies expect you to work? Since I started the course, I was lucky enough to get into a nursing program at a local college. I intend to go on to get my RN, so I will be in school for about 3 more years and I REALLY need flexible way to earn money. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

The only reason I started the course was so I could do something flexible. If it isn't flexible, I'll just work as an LPN making more money.

Since I am now and will continue to be in school during the day AND I have a small child. I MUST do this from home and I already have a dedicated space where I study.

Well first you should worry about what there is available first before you start asking about flexibility. If you went to a local college and did there transcription program you might have a hard time finding work without experience. I'm currently doing medical transcription as well but i'm going through the top school and the country and all the nationwide job places wave the 2 years experience if you go to this school. Most of the national jobs (that aren't local) give you like a 12 hour window to work a 7-8 hour shift and you just have to make sure you work that many hours within that 12 hour window. This website will be the most benificial to you I think.

Sounds like you've got a lot on your plate.

For an at-home med transcription job, you'd pretty much need a couple years or more of doing MT work in an office first, so that will probably not work out for you although much of what you've learned in your MT studies will probably help in your nursing studies and career. And the office jobs might be a little flexible but probably not a lot. See http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos271.htm#earnings for more info on MT jobs and wages.

Fortunately you have a "plan B", your LPN work.

Good luck.

I noticed you are from GA. In Atlanta, for example, a starting MT could expect to make $24,000 to $32,000 per year working full time. There are home transcription companies online that dangle a $40,000 or $50,000 a year number in front of people but it always says UP TO and they usually charge $15,000 to $20,000 to get started and they give no guarantees they will ever get you a client.

Get on with an established company. I do not recommend trying this out of your home anymore. Under current HIPPA rules, you must have a separate dedicated work space, where your family does not come in, for patient privacy, this is usually very difficult to find in most homes.

Good luck!
