Try to get it from the continent. In Eastern Europe I saw a lot of them on sale.

I gave up and bought a 40gb. only 2 kinds on sale in UK 40gb and 60gb, 60gb has been discontinued after current stock has been sold off.
40gb not backwards compatible with ps2 games only with PSone, but if you have a ps2 anyway thats no problem (same as me). saves you quite a bit on purchase price if you find the right bundle in store, also, the 40gb is the latest version to be released so should have any previous problems fixed.
the usb ports can be expanded as with any usb 2.0 port, you can daisy chain hundreds of usb on to one port. the hard drive could be a bit small, but it might be possible to add an external usb hdd (not sure)
anyway, if you want one for christmas with a guarantee, bite the bullet and get a 40gb, (get buyers remorse for a couple of days then accept that this is the version everyone will have to buy in the near future in the uk) :-)

I say you should just get the 40gb playstation because i mean that is a lot of space and i'm not 100% about this but i think you can only play old playstation games on the 40gb or its that you can't play old playstation games on the 80gb. i now its one of them. also if you have the money for a 60gb, for a bit more money tou can get a xbox 360 elite and it has 120gb and there lots of things on the 360 that are better than the 360 and vice-versa but i think the 360 is better.

I would continue searching for the 60 gb especially if you want to play PS2 games on your PS3. But if backward compatibility isn't needed, then go with the 40 gb.
I don't think Sony discontinued the 60 gb in Europe because it never had the emotion engine to begin with. The 60 gb has always used software emulation for backward compatibility, so Sony was saving quite a lot of money.

The 60gb was discontiuned. You should get the 80gb it has more features like backwards compatibility with ps3 games, 4 usb ports instead of 2 and flash card readers.

I would suggest the 80 gig if you can't find the 60 gig. However if you don't mind not being able to play PS2 games then the 40 gig will be fine.
