Well, i just got a new dog. He is only 3 months old. When he first came to our house, he just loved his dog food. But i have another dog. She doesn't like eating her dog food, she only wants to eat our food. Now that the dogs know each other now, the one I just got will not eat his dog food anymore. Any suggestions?

Your dog has discovered human food and finds it very tasty.
You will have to feed both dogs, dog food and only dog food.
Dogs will not starve themselves.
Put the food down at breakfast time, leave it down only 15-20 minutes. If not eaten, pick it up and just leave water down all day.
Then at dinner time, do the same thing again.
You will find your dogs will be so hungry that they will eat their dog food.
It is not cruel. Just a way of telling your dogs that what is in their bowl is what they get.
Some dogs are just stubborn, but all will eat in time.
Just be patient.

IF you notice vomiting or worms in the stool be sure to have the dogs examined by a veterinarian.
Dogs should never eat people food. They will hold out on the dog food hoping to get your food instead. Dogs can go days without eating so it's not a big deal for them. The puppy will follow the lead of the older dog in the learning process.
Stop the people food and then when they get hungry enough they will eat their dog food. Believe me when I tell you if they don't eat their dog food they are not all that hungry.
Be sure not to buy cheap dog food to save money. Pay the extra and get the best.

If they seem healthy otherwise, I can't really blame them for preferring whatever you're eating over commercial dog food. Unless you're eating junk food, it's probably better. We make our dog's food from scratch, which you could do, but it takes research to make sure you don't give them the wrong stuff (onions, chocolate, too many organ meats...). Basically she eats fish, poultry, lamb and a side of veggies such as green beans. It's not that hard if you make a big batch twice a week and freeze it, but for a puppy you've got to find out the right meat and fat ratio for him. I think when people say don't feed pets "human food" they mean that there are many things people eat that are toxic to dogs - and people, but that doesn't stop most of us ;-) Or maybe there are giant bags of crunchy kibble in the store labeled "People Food."

Can you tell if they're healthy? For example, as others have said, is there any vomiting, and do they have normal poo? (sorry - gross, but important) Are they energetic and drinking a normal amount of water?

All that being said, if you prefer they eat commercial dog food, never feed anything else and they'll get hungry enough to eat dog food pretty soon. Some people are into raw food only and they have healthy dogs, but it's not my thing. I cook the food mostly. See the link I list as a source if you want to. :o)

ha, sounds like my neighbors dog. Youve been giving them too much human food and of course dogs know the difference between the two. What id do is give him dog food and put a few peices of chicken down in the food that way theyll eat both

dogs won't often eat dog food if they are getting what they want "people food"
You have trained them that they can have what they want. Also the younger will learn from the older.
The only way to change htis is dog food only and no and I mean no people food.

I agree with a lot of the posters that have already posted.

Here is another approach that I use in my house. I always mix in something with my Great Dane's food and she just gobbles it up. I use either yogurt, cheese, leftover meats, canned dog food, cottage cheese, boiled chicken or ground turkey, homemade dog food(made from boiling chicken, rice, carrots and then mxing in canned pumpkin)

Cut off the people food. No dog skeletons have ever been found next to a full food bowl.

Place their food in its regular location and go about your day. I guarantee it will soon be gone.

Your dogs have more will power than you do. They are learning if they hold out they will get table food. So maybe if they wait long enough they will get that steak.

Animals don't starve themselves out of spite.
