i'm going to buy a tomtom for my fiancee, and i have no idea how this thing works. does it have to be installed into the car, or is it portable? and if its portable, where do you keep it in the car while your driving? do you charge it in your house when your not driving your car?

It comes with a suction cup and a mounting bracket which you attach to the windshield or dashboard of your car. The GPS is snapped into that bracket. People typically take the GPS with them to avoid theft, but leave the bracket behind.

You charge by plugging the GPS into the cigarette lighter of the car. You can also charge at home with an AC adapter and/or USB cable, which are provided in most units (some less expensive units don't give you that, and you have to buy as an extra if you want). A full charge is good for 5-8 hours as advertised, or less in reality.

as with all sat-navs it should plug straight into the cigarette lighter. if the car does not have one it can be modified by an auto-electrician to handle it. nearly all sat-navs come with a suction cup to stick on the windscreen (windsheild in the USA). most also come with re-chargeable batteries for directions while walking in cities etc (my navman has this).
