Every person is different. It is according to your shooting abilities. Each person has there comfort zone at which they shoot. A person that only shoots a month before hunting season should only shoot 35 Max. An experienced hunter that shoots most of the year can be more comfortable at shooting out to 45 or more yards. It also depends on the bow and the draw weight you are shooting at. An average person with an average bow should stay within 20 to 30 yards.

I know that Claude Pollington who is the owner of CP Oneida killed an injured Whitetail in Idaho back in the early 90's at 160 yards. I was actually there and saw the shot. He would never normally take a shot like that but the deer had a broken rear leg and was really having a tough time getting through the snow.

I don't know that anybody has ever bothered or if the longest shot has ever been recorded. I know for a fact that Fred Bear (Deceased). World Famous Archer & Founder of Bear Archery Equipment Company killed a B&C Class Whitetail Buck in Illinois at 88 yards with a single arrow in the 1960's....I remember reading about it as a kid in the NFAA Magazine (National Field Archery Association). In current NFAA tournaments 80 yard targets in the Bowhunter Class are common place.
