The EU 60gb model is actually full software emulation for ps1 games but for ps2 games it requires the graphics synthesizer at least which the 60gb model has, the 40gb model had this removed to cut down production costs.

Without the hardware emulation of ps2 games is considerably harder and not worth pursuing especially in a low cost model.

If you really want to play your old games I would say get a ps2, or if you have one keep it.

It seems like the 40 gig won't support the software emulation. It's probably down to firmware on the new PS3's not having the emulator profiles for the PS2 and PSX, so its pretty unlikely that you'll ever be able to run those games on a 40gig PS3.

No, there is no way to add backward compatibility to the 40GB PS3, and most likely, Sony wont offer to add backwards compatibility to it because they want to go and buy the remaining 60GB PS3's or get the 80GB PS3's. The 20GB PS3's are also backwards compatible, but they are long gone and few of them are still avaliable.

No, unfortunately, it's impossible. Sony had removed all PS2 chips from 40GB version. 20GB and 60GB (NTSC) have the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed. 80GB has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. 40GB has none of them, but it has an improved cooling system and it needs less electricity.
