i have two budgies and theyre quite enjoyable birds.they do the funniest things and do a LOT of chirping.first you get a cage thats big enough for your budgie to fly around in,then you clean the cage every other day or when it starts looking grungy, what i do is i take the sandpaper cage liner and scrape the birds droppings off it and i put it back,it helps when youre running low on the cage liners.get a package of spray millets budgies love this, put one in the cage and dont replace it until your bird has eatten all the seeds..budgies eat a wide range of fruits:apples ,oranges, bananas etc etc. the few things you do not want to feed your budgie are avacados and chocolate, these are poisonous to a budgie. after youve gotten the budgie, cage and its essentials like food and treats get a book on the care of parakeets, the animal planet people put a book out on the care of your budgie, its an excellent book.before i forget when geting your little budgie, tell the person thats in charge of the birds to kindly clip your budgies wings, this prevents them from flying high should it ever escape fom the cage.have a good time with your new companion.

I had a couple of parakeets as a kid and they were great. One had a fabulous personality. I'd suggest you take a close look at a local pet store. Make certain the birds look healthy. See if you can find one in the bunch that seems to be curious about you. In most cases, the birds lived well over a year (I think 2-3).
Oh, and parakeets can be LOUD when they chirp and call. To calm them down, put a towel over their cage to make it dark inside.
Cheers.

I have had pet parakeets since I was six. Yes they can die (unfortunate thing from having pets. They can be very friendly and loud. Depending on how well you take care of them they can live pretty long. Bluey (my old little bird) is 11 years old. Take care of them by changing water daily. Have food for them at all times. Feed them fruits and veggies so they won't gain too much weight. Also buy two of them because they will get lonely and at least they will have someone to socialize with. good luck with picking out a pet!

Budgies are great pets! The person who said they weren't allowed to take their parakeet out of the cage does not understand anything about parakeets - they need to be taken out and have lots of interaction with their owners.
A parakeet that is kept properly WILL interact with you. You can take it out of the cage and teach it to sit on your hand. You can teach it to do tricks. You can teach it to talk. The bird with the largest vocabluary in history (1,728 words) was a parakeet. http://birdwithmostwords.com/

Yea, they're cool. I went to my friend's house once and she showed me her pet budgie, which she named 'Budgie'. But you need to be committed to own a pet, as they demand attention and care. And I like to touch their feathers by the way. :D

Yes they are the best pets in my opinion. If you can get tame budgies, get them. It will save your time as the taming process is quite long. You can even teach them to talk. If the budgie is tamed, get a small cage if you are confident in taking them out also they can fly. If you get a budgie from petsmart or petco, ask for a male because they are easier to tame and can learn lots of phrases to talk. A tip is that you should let it be for a few days or a week then start training it as fast as npossible because the younger they are, the easier they are to tame. If your budgie is tame and you get them a small cage, buy them a bird playground so that they can do something when they are out of their cage. In my experience, they are great because they sing and dance and also do air tricks and when they sing they will cheer you up as well as making your home a happier place with their cute voices and chirps.
