Hi,
Unfortunately that seems to be a big problem with Islam and many branches of Christianity as well. For the most part you will get away with false statements and generalizations on YA but in any Academic or knowledgeable situations you will get a big F.
I blame much of the lack of knowledge on our educational systems. History of the world that use to be compulsory no longer is in many school systems. If you ask quite a few people today who Marcus Aurelius, Tamerlane, Saladin or Omar Khyyam were they are more than likely to ask, for whose football team do they play. Sigh, I even saw a Canadian fellow write into a forum and say he hates the Americans because they stole Alaska from Canada.

Easy, you don't need much knowledge of it. If we who are not Islamists look at the way women are treated in Islamic countries, we see enough to know that it is by normal standards of decency a very bad religion. Unless treating half the human population as dirt is not a bad thing, of course.
It is amazing how many Islamists like to live the way we do in the west. Go to Marbella and ask around about the way the Saudi princes behave when they come over, and you will see what I mean. They drink the place dry, yet will give a 1000 lashes to any poor subject who even sips alcohol back home. If that is not enough for you, look at the awful way the Taliban treat people.
The stronger a follower is of Islam, the worse they behave. Unless, of course, killing and maiming innocent civilians on our tube trains and twin towers is not bad behaviour.

I don't think we really need a strong opinion about Islam, unless you're Islamic, we just need to learn to respect each other's beliefs.
No religion actually promotes violence, people just use religion as an excuse for violence because it's one of those things that make us different. If we all believed the same thing (not just religion but sport, politics, etc) the world would be a dull place.
The problems occur when people try and conform others. Trying to make people change (especially when they try and do it forcefully) is wrong.
Your opinions are best kept to yourself until you have a strong knowledge base. As i am constantly reminded by people who've answered some of my questions,
"You should experience something and really know what you're talking about before you pass judgement/make an unimformed opinion."

Islam presents a religion based on fear of God rather than love of God and whilst some people apparently need this approach it doesn't suit everyone. To the casual observer islam appears to be peopled by bigots and fanatics who are obviously full of hatred. Their sharia law advocates the stoning to death of women who commit adultery (what happens to men), the chopping off of hands that have stolen. We saw the taliban in the name of islam shooting women etc. in the sports stadium which was filled to capacity. We see hookhand calling for the death of all non muslims, we see young people being brainwashed into becoming suicide bombers to murder as many as possible and they say it is pleasing to God.
They will never enter paradise with blood on their hands, hatred in their hearts and hypocrisy on their lips. They obviously know nothing of God and they have the nerve to say islam is a religion of love and peace!
This is why people have strong opinions about islam, we don't need to consult the koran or the hadith when we see how islam is manifest in the western world. Why do they say they are fleeing oppresive regimes and then want to impose those regimes and laws on the rest of us. Here we have freedom of religion and speech that extends to all regardless of their philosophies. I love God, I practise one religion they practise another and some think we merit death because we are not muslims.

There are far too many well educated ex-Muslims (Ph.Ds) that have written about Islam, plus we also have history.
One good book is "Islam Revealed" written by DR Anis Shorrosh, a Palestinian by birth, but now an American citizen.
Look at Dr.s Ergin and Emir Canners work. (Liberty University)
Then there is the Islamic doctrine of "al takkeya". Which basically means a Muslim is encouraged to lie if it benefits Islam or another Muslim. This is why negotiations always eventually fail with Muslims-they can lie for Allah, and it okay.

Good point! it's the behaviour of being a sheep just following what others are saying. Find out the facts before making judgemental comments on a religion. In every religion there are people that take things too far but that doesn't give the right to curse the religion. It's just people's behaviour not the religions fault. There have been priests etc that have done some terrible things but you don't see everyone turning against all Christians, we are all accountable for ourselves not everyone who follows the same religion!.

Quite true, unfortunately the extremists always seem to have plenty of backwards nutters shouting for someone to be beheaded,we are told they are a peaceful people, but we see the opposite of that all the time when we turn on our tv's,more hostages in Iraq being threatened with death.
I see people from near where I grew up being arrested after bombings or attempted bombings.
The leader of the council of british muslims admitted it would be his wish to convert the UK to come under religious law, that will of course never happen as we as a nation reject god whichever faith they happen to believe in and would remove any such threat with force if need be...
You do of course have many fine upstanding muslims who commit no crimes and live peacefully with those of other creeds,it's just that we don't get to see that much of it on the tv ....

read the quran thanks two different translations both full of hate to non believers. read the historical evidence full of violence but most religions are, i make decissions on the actions of the followers not what people who died years ago did, and the books they got this belief from. if the ones making the trouble for islam are the minority why arn't the majority doing something? or is it the majority are causing the trouble and the minority are the peacefull ones?
before telling people they don't know anything try finding out first

These people only read and hear the media---who will pick only anything that is shocking and an attention getter.
I do not think that most people have the interest to learn about different religions. The ones that do, have no problems with studying Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and many of the far Eastern concepts----mostly Buddhism. I do think, tho, it takes a more inquiring (intelligent) mind to do this.
Really, it takes a more educated and inquiring mind in Muslims to learn and really understand their own religion. Then, it is the same in all religions.

One thing that we know about Islam is that Muslims pretend that its absurdities don't exist, and make out that it is misunderstood by its detractors. The reverse is true. The problem Muslims have is that many non-Muslims know far too much to be taken in by Islam, and are defenceless against them.
One gets the same old trick from Roman Catholics.
