I am getting ready to start deer hunting next season and this tradition is really freaking me out. Will the guides "make" me drink or smear the blood on my face?

Or is this some movie/internet rumor I'm buying into?

It isn't a rumor or fairy tale, but a tradition older than our nation! It was, and still is where I was raised.
It isn't 'necessary', but this ages old tradition has always been a part of that memorable 'first hunt' where I come from, and, looking back on yours in years to come, it just may be a loss you will regret if you don't. . . . . .

I did it, both the drink and 'baptism', and losing my shirt tail, in celebration of my first victory, and the animal who gave its' life so that I and my family could survive a little better, as so did all of my uncles and cousins, and, for better or worse during the event, we ALL remember it with the same fond remembrance that I have after all these long years past.

From the sound of so many of these other 'city boy' answers, my family must be a REAL bunch of heathen 'Mountain Williams'! ! ! !

Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse to accept blood transfusions. This refusal is based on Bible commands, the earliest of which says: “Only flesh with its soul—its blood—you must not eat.” First-century Christians were told simply: “Keep abstaining . . . from blood.”—Genesis 9:4; Acts 15:29; Leviticus 17:14. Jehovah’s Witnesses recognize that “abstaining from . . . blood” means not accepting blood transfusions and not donating or storing their own blood for transfusion. Out of respect for God’s law, they also do not accept the four primary components of blood: red cells, white cells, platelets, and plasma Even though Jehovah’s Witnesses’ stand on blood goes “against the mainstream,” many doctors now see merit in their position. The Witnesses’ stand has been a major factor behind a number of innovative medical procedures that reduce blood loss during surgery. This has resulted in benefits to Witness and non-Witness patients alike. However, the main reason Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse blood is firmly founded on the Bible, as noted in the introduction.

Not neccessary and Not required...

The drinking of blood on a "first" kill dates back to the days of the wild west and indian lore..The Indians used to drink the blood or eat the heart of the Deer or Buffalo in order to pay tribute to the "Spirit" of the animal they have killed. It wasn't to be gross, but actually was done to show respect and honor for the wild animals spirit, and the Indians did this frequently
as a true tribute the the life and death of the animals themselves. The drinking of blood was a "connection" of sorts
between the Indian Hunter and his quarry.........

That is an old old tradition my grandfather use to tell me as well. It use to be a rite of passage for men of certain tribes to show they respected the animal they had just kills and to take some of the animals strength. Now a days it is largely used to freak out new hunters like your self. The guide or who ever told you this is just josh you. Hope you enjoy your first forray into the wilds and bag a big one.

Chris....that initiation right is merely designed to give you a greater reverence for the life you have taken.

A true hunter never takes the life in vain and treats it with the greatest respect. Drinking the animals blood make you want to think twice before you kill another...

My family uses it as a way to ensure there are no "trophy hunters" and that all we hunt for is food.

ANOTHER way to make this happen is to take the heart and liver of the animal and make sure you cook it "personally"and eat both. Wholly.....this will certainly make you think twice about just pulling the trigger next time.

As the boys above me have said....fire the guide that tries to make you do it. Personally, I would punk him...

Cheers! And Merry Christmas!

I think this whole world has gone crazy. The people I deer hunt with threaten to cut your shirt tail off if you miss a shot at a deer. Never heard of anyone who was sane actually drinking blood.

No the blood drinking thing is pure BS, but some do smear a little on you , it's not a bad thing you know just for fun.
Down here in the south we do cut off your shirt tail sometimes if you miss a shot, although this is usually only done in hunting clubs.

There are enough idiots out there that try to push the drinking of the blood. That was something some of the native americans use to do after a kill. My question to you is, are you native american? If not, don't buy into this drinking of the blood. Its a hunting tradition that needs to die.

That is up to you whether you want to or not.* It is a tradition through history, but not every Hunter choose to do so.*

That was in the movie Red Dawn and now everyone thinks they have to. I had never heard about that before the movie came out and I come from an area where almost everyone hunted. So, no I doubt the guides if they are professionals will ask you to do that. The one thing we did make everyone do for their first deer is to gut it and field dress it. The stench is unbelieveable and it's entertaining to watch them gag from the smell!
