Firstly it depends on the crime and what categaory of prison that person requires.

They do take into account where the person lives in order that they can place them near to where family can visit.

Obviously it doesn't always work but they do try.

Much depends on such as available accommodation - re prison over crowding etc., and also the level of crime committed and conviction etc. Most folk get sent to one of the farms [an open prison] and some even get to go out during the day with an order to be back 'home' before dark etc.

You are usually sent to a holding prison first, then sent to the nearest prison which has the available space.
You can ask for a transfer to another prison but have to have a good reason.

They are first sent to a holding prison and assessed. Where they go next will depend on space, catergory, their choice and how well they coped in the holding prison.

They are always able to apply for transfer from and to any prison during their sentance. Whether they get it will be down to why they want it (closer to family, inside courses available etc), available spaces and their behaviour inside so far
