I'm part of a fostering program with Greyhound Pets of America. I recommend adopting a greyhound for several reasons! Above all - they are very loving, attentive creatures who will either be lazy, playful, outgoing, shy, graceful or clumsy (or a combination of all!)...but also a thief of your heart for eternity! Many people who have adopted and/or fostered don't stop at just one - because they are just that grand! Contrary to most beliefs of them, they do not need tremendous amounts of exercise and can be a great apartment dog provided you have permission to own a 50-plus pound dog and have the time to train it and take it for a brisk 10 minute walk at least 3 times a week plus a romp in a fenced-in yard. They are very intelligent! I recommend them highly!

I have a greyhound, and I would endorse this breed above the others you mentioned. Greyhounds are very easy to own. They are remarkably lazy, very loving, and there are so many that need homes. They really don't need a whole lot of room, but they do love to run a bit from time to time.
Whatever you decide, please don't buy a dog. Rescue a dog. There are so many dogs that are killed because homes can't be found. I don't know how breeders justify making more dogs when there is already such a surplus. A pound mutt will give you every bit as much love and satisfaction as a pure-bred, and will have fewer health problems to boot!
A dog is a life-long companion, not a fashion accessory.

All of those breeds are so different from each other, what made you choose them?
You should choose a type of dog based on questions you ask yourself:
Do you have the time to put in to training a dog?
Will you have support from family members to help you train the dog?
Do you have a big house with lots of room for the dog to run around?
Do you have a big, fenced-in yard for the dog to burn off energy?
Are you financially prepared for everything that comes along with owning a dog (routine vet visits, grooming, training, emergencies, etc.)
If you're not home for 8 hours a day, is there someone else that is willing to let the dog out at least once during the day?
Have you thought about adopting a mixed breed? Purebreds are not always the best option.

It sounds like you are on the right track. I have several friends who have adopted retired grey hounds and one who adopts whippets. They look like grey hounds but are smaller. Either way you will have a wonderful lap dog. (yes the greyhounds are a lapfull but what the heck) An adult dog is the only way to go if you are at work all day. Chihuahuas are so small they can't go outside in cold weather to toilet so you are stuck with a dog box in the house. Grey hounds and whippets need coats but unless it is below zero can be walked and use the great outdoors for a toilet. My friend with the whippets travels with several of them (one at a time usually) and they seem toget along in strange places with lots of strange people very well.

You seem very adverse to the type of dog you want - like any smaller breed would be fine.
Instead of searching out a "Particular" breed, why don't you just go to your local pound or animal control and pick out a smaller sized puppy who is need of a loving home?
You can ask them all sorts of questions in regard to the home life you can offer, and they can stear you in the direction of an adoptable dog that will be suitable for your lifestyle.

I would get the greyhound, for you they sound perfect.
One not to get would be a golden retriever because I have one and they need lots of attention and have a very high amount of energy.. they cant sit still a long time. They also need to be outside a lot to get exercise.

OK, I think I can help you. If you don't have much time to exercise it, then I suggest not getting a working dog, which need exercise, like a Siberian Husky, or a Saint Bernard.
If you would like a small dog, I suggest a Shi Tzu (i think that is how you spell it). Or if you would like a little bit of a bigger dog, a Lhasa Apso. I have one, and I love him to death!
