You have raised a wonderful point, Batman.

What other people think of me (or you, or anyone else) has no bearing on who you really are.
This was the major point of a sermon I heard a few years ago.

"Whatever anyone says about me or thinks about me has nothing to do with my worth."

I'm a someone I have an opinion of me and, for better or worse, that's my reality. Yes, comments, both good and bad from some people, like my husband are important. However, I take what they say, evaluate it, decide if it's worth it, and adapt it to my own self. My mother and MIL have their own pieces of advice on how I should raise my daughter. I consider what they say (i.e., my mother thinks I nurse my daughter too often, that 1.5 to two hours is too often even though she's only elven weeks old). Evaluate it and take some or all or none of it and fit it into what I think/feel/believe, etc. I do not immediately think that because my mother doesn't like what I'm doing as a mother that I'm a horrible mother. Though I sometimes think that my mother doesn't know the whole situation, as we don't even live in the same state. Yet, I take her advice and evaluate it, knowing that she did it or something similar with my siblings and me and we turned out okay. I even do the same with my MIL's advice, as she did produce my husband, though I'm sometimes still amazed that they are biologically related.

My mother and father raised me to think for myself. I may not always have the best opinion of myself and what I do. However, it's my opinion of me and that's what matters.

I fail to see the connection between the devil and someone's opinion of me. And yes, my house is filthy sometimes, I can't get the kids to lift a finger to help.
