I honestly don't get it. It was called one of the "scariest movies" of that year.
Three guys hook up in Europe for some uninhibited, meaningless sex, pot smoking, and alcohol abuse, only to get lured into a trap with the promise of even MORE uninhibited meaningless sex, and find a group of people who have sunk to the next level of depravity, for which sex and drugs are no longer thrilling, now they have to kill people to get a rise. Are we surprised? And this is scary why?
To make it worse, the survivor who gets away lowers himself to the level of his captors and goes on a little killing spree. So in essense, he learned absolutely nothing.
Was it gory? yeah. Graphic, violent? Yup. Excessive nudity and sex? You betcha. But scary? Please. Were it not for my excessive eye rolling I would have fallen asleep.
Please explain why this movie is so scary. Do you empathize with the characters? Do you really think this could happen to you?

Did it occur to anyone that if they hadn't been chasing after evil in the first place, they never would have encountered a greater evil?

Ugh. "People who don't call themselves Christian" wouldn't fit in the box, okay? And that's who I wanted to address this question to. No offense was meant.

I think everyone fears pain... and that movie had alot of torture presented in it. It was the fear of pain, imho. The movie was not "scary" in the traditional sense, but certainly was gory.

I think it's the notion of the situtation that is more frightening...the implications of the Bloodhoud Club's existence: That there are people out there so monstrous and powerful that they not only would pay large amounts of money to torture and mutilate complete strangers, there are also well-funded people who would happily provide them that pleasure.
As for "lowering himself" to the level of his captors, I rather doubt that he would have been able to escape at all if he had simply walked out and expected to get away without a scratch...and I might add that he risked his liffe to try to save a complete stranger. As for what befell the final villain...I can't see myself letting the SOB simply get away with what he had done to my friends either. He almost certainly wasn't going to face any kind of justice for his actions otherwise...

Okay, here some aspects of Gunas and Gunateet withwhich the Delusive World is assumed to be run by the 100 % Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient God. For you to read all the links if you have patience and taste for probable logical deductions and inductions into aspects of Godhood..

With reference to the movie that you are talking, a child ignorant of the aspects that its just a movie and villains are unreal may try to tore away or shoot even the screen that run the picture (given a pistol) thinking its absolutely real villainism. So the lesson is ignorant children should be kept away from such movies or they should not be given the freedom to handle pistol or knife to tore the Screen where the Show is going on or if freedom is given to interact with unfathomable aspects like directly communicating with the Real Ones behind the screen directly, the innocent child may think they are real villains and may try to even attack them vehemently given the freedom. Perhaps the child should be educated that they are just actors presenting a picture ..
So perhaps diving deeper into Scriptures / Scripts and communicating directly with the 100 % Real Actor or Maker behind such Scary Dramas, not at all the cup of tea for the ignorant and innocent ones.
They are perhaps there to see only the good films of the Same Creator and appreciate the Actors and Director. When they come to know the Same Director directed the Scary One, they may just get afraid or do something nasty out of their ignorance .. So the mantra for such common and innocent people to have good rapport with the Creator, is perhaps "See No Evil, Do No Evil and Think No Evil" with restrictions till they Realise the Real Truth.
Here one link into the innocent Value systems like that of a child perhaps ..

May be these are some aspects of such dramas in a larger scale happening in the World with a 100 % Omnipresent, Omniscient and Omnipotent Divine Director.
Now here one special link on probable aspects of a Divine Dictator, whether Thee would like to Divinise or Demonise the Matters that are completely under His control.

The best horror movies were the old-school B movies; where the main character was a somewhat decent person that you didn't want to die.
Nowadays, all horror movies seem to involve obnoxious teeny-boppers as the stars; hopefully the "villain" kills them before the theater audience does.

As a lifelong film-lover (especially horror and supernatural thrillers) I found 'Hostel' to be a dead-loss in the scare dept. In fact, it was a loss in all depts.
Just another tacky gore-fest with no imagination, no chills, no characters, and no impact. The B-movie grade script wasn't even a satire, what's that all about?
Short answer...it wasn't scary.

Ok, imagine your country gets defeated in a world war or something that will happen in the next 5 to 10 years....
perverted soldiers from foreign countries grab you and your family and torture you - burning you, chopping off your limbs....would you be scared then?
That's what you're saying, right?
If you go looking for trouble, you should expect bad things to happen to ya, but you live your normal consumer life and something bad happens, it's scary.
Can you see through yourself?

it wasn't scary it was sad that people actually like to watch people being tortured like that, it had way to much T&A in it! and it made no sense. the only people in the movie theater was probably dumb teenagers.

Yawn. Modern-day horror movies bore me and allow me a chuckle at best. The Japanese ones aren't all that bad, though.
There is an entertainment section, you know.
