Just as a matter of interest, how many "shouts" would a firefighter in the UK attend in an average year?

It depends on the type of area they cover and the population that inhabits the area. The station that covers the part of the city that I live in has 3 high risk areas (malicious fires) in it and one of them accounted for around 100 call outs last year. The station that covers the area has 4 watches but the fires aren't necessarily spread evenly between the watches. There really isn't an average. If you look at your local Fire Service web page there will be information on there but a lot of English Fire Services don't give statistics to members of the public - I'm a contact for my local Fire Service and I'm often told which statistics I can reveal and to whom.

Probably a lot. I dont have an exact figure, you could always look up the statistics. But it's not just fires they have to sort out, and there are enough of them.

Difficult to be exact - I heard of one fire-fighter who retired from the service after 20 years who said that he had never been called out in all of his 20 years. He was in a rural station.

Here in London my guess is the number of shouts could be quite considerable. There's a greater probability of fire[s] in large towns and cities than in rural areas or smaller market towns etc.

ANSWER - DUNNO!

I'm sure if you stopped by the local station, they would have statistics for you. Their calls vary greatly, and probably include a lot more than fire calls. They likely give school talks, and do fire code inspections quite often.

They're busy on the job and deserve more pay than cops, since they save life and property and don't shoot or taser citizens.

Regardless, they're far more respected and appreciated than cops, for not making people feel belittled and taken advantage of.
