There is no relation between Islam and sikhism. In fact sikhism (Khalsa panthh) was started by Guru Gobind Singh to save hinduism from the tyranny of Muslim rulers, who killed innocent hindus for not accepting Islam.,
Ninth Guru of sikhs, Teg Bahadur singh was butchered in Chandani chowk Delhi for refusing to accep Islam alongwith his followers.
Two sons of 10th guru Gobind singh were killed in war and two teen-aged sons were burried alive by the Nawab of sirhind to teach Gobind Singh a lesson.
Banda Bahadur singh, the Tantrik follower of Gobind singh took revenge for the death of kids, but he too was capture and asked either to accept Islam or be butchered. On his refusal, his skin was removed from his body and his sons heart was forced into his mouth.
This is all history and it is also a fact that had there been no Sikhs, hinduism would not have survived in North India.
While establishing the Khalsa panthh Sikhs were expected to wear 5 Ks ( hairs, turban, long underwear, iron bracelet and comb). This was a sort of uniform for the army to fight muslims
So In a way sikhs were asked to be in uniform till the tyranny of Islam continues.
And it is going on still, just in 1947 muslims killed millions of sikhs and hindus and raped and converted their womenfolks.

Long uncut hair is one of the Ks. and to cover it the Turban is wornk by Sikhs. The significance of them are -
Kesh
…ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ॥
"…complete form is with turban donned."
(SGGSJ Ang 1084)
"One who does not tie a fresh turban is liable for penalty. For this reason it is mandatory for every Sikh of the Guru to tie a turban everyday."
A Sikh never cuts or trims any hair (Kesh), to indicate the perfection of God's creation. The comb keeps the hair tidy, a symbol of not just accepting what God has given, but also an injunction to maintain it with grace. The Guru said hair should be allowed to grow naturally. For men, this includes not shaving. At the time of Guru Gobind Singh, some holy men let their hair become tangled and dirty. The Guru said that this was not right. Hair should be allowed to grow but it should be kept clean and combed at least twice a day.
A Dastaar is turban worn to protect the Kesh (unshorn hair) and guard the Dasam Duaar (the Tenth Gate), a spiritual opening at the top of the head. The turban is a spiritual crown, which is a constant reminder to the Sikh that he or she is sitting on the throne of consciousness and is committed to living according to Sikh principles. It is the identity of a Sikh. Guru Gobind Singh jee told His Sikhs: “Khaalsa mero roop hai kaas. Khaalsa mai ho karo nivaas... The Khalsa is my image. Within the Khalsa I reside.” Wearing a turban declares sovereignty, dedication, self-respect, courage and piety.-

They traditionally never cut their hair. I´m no expert, but from what I´ve seen I think they put the hair in a bun, then cover that with a little piece of cloth held by an elastic, then put the turban on top. Am I correct?

not cutting their hair is one of the five principals of Sikhism started later in the course of sikh history. It was started to show belief in god and bring up unity among sikhs. It happened when muslims attacked north india, plunder temples, kill people. Sikhs stood like a great wall against those barbaric muslims. I think those five principles had helped them in this fight.

I am inclined to side with "A Muslim" on his assessment. I wonder why people will write any crap just to prove a point - even if that means contradicting themselves.
But I did hear (let's be clear on this ... I only heard) that Sikhs initially did NOT sport a beard. It was only after one of their subsequent gurus that they took oath not to cut the beards till they took revenge on the Muslims. Therefore since I too "heard" this story, I will question the questioner.
Sikh friends. Could you please enlighten us here.
Edited later (for Big Bang ... the next responder):
A big thanks for the piece of history. I had lost this piece somewhere in the many cells in my brain. Thanks for helping find all that.

Sikhism is a combination of Hinduism and Islam, so they harbour no ill feelings towards either religion.
It's a syncretic religion.
