Even the bottle says to remove the thing after cooking!

My mother used to stress over the bay leaf and it would always be in my fathers food!

She told me you don't eat it because it is poisonous but that doesn't make sense if we can have it cook in our foods.

So is it poisonous or just really hard to chew up?

Bay Leaves are very good for flavoring so many things, like gumbos, etc. They really make a difference in the taste of food.

No it's not poisonous it's just that you can't chew it and it's not very pleasant to find in your food.

Bay leaf (plural bay leaves), Greek Daphni, Romanian Foi de Dafin; is the aromatic leaf of several species of the Laurel family (Lauraceae). Fresh or dried bay leaves are used in cooking for their distinctive flavor and fragrance.

Mountain laurel leaves are poisonous to certain livestock and are not sold anywhere as a spice (cousin species) (britannica). This has led to the mistaken belief that bay leaves should be removed from food after cooking because they might poison humans. Bay leaves are safe to eat, however, a person may accidentally swallow a leaf, and the leaves remain stiff even after several hours of cooking. This sometimes causes cutting of the throat and should be avoided.

It never really softens and has quite a bit of "bite" for one mouthful. That is why they suggest you remove it. I just eat around it...

You remove it so no one chokes on it. It's just common sense.
