dirt accumulates easily behind ur ears as sweat and dirt/dust from scalp goes down with sweat thru that path behind the ears. And it smells really bad after it dries up.

Good question, I never went out of my way to wash behind my ears but of course they get washed when I wash my hair and so on, but my child is interesting, she gets quite a thick buildup behind her ears which we've had to scrub quite hard to get away, so she has to wash behind her ears regularly.

The area behing the ears is naturally very greasy as a result dirt collects behind them if not washed. Small bots are always told to wash behind them as a matter of course.
In the case of adults it may refer to another expression of being innocent of the real world i.e. wet behind the ears so you need to wash and dry them.

When I first moved to this area people would say "I am going to wash my ***" I thought that was a funny statement, I could just see them bending over and only washing "that" part of their body LOL In any case, it does give me a funny visual.

because you sweat back there and it can start to stink..you wash behind your ears the same reasonyou wash your @ss

When you wash your face, your ears flop back and protect that area. Gotta take the extra effort to wash there.
