I have good suspicion that I'll be laid off at the end of the year. Every time I try to talk to my boss about my projects, she puts me off or says something contradictory, or something else changes. I work in a place where there is so much office politics going on that whether or not I proved to her I can do the job, if her boss doesn't think so or wants me out--I'm gone.

I know I can do the job, but it just may not matter. In fact, I feel they hired me just to fill the position. I feel that they were still looking all along, regardless of my performance, because I told them the truth about my background and experience and they knew I didn't have all the qualifications for the position, but enough to get me hired.

So, what should I do? Play dumb, confront boss, what?? I'm putting my feelers out for other jobs, but i really want to stay at this one, so I'm reluctant to submit my resumes officially.

Your company has a serious communication problem. Obviously your boss is in the position to know, but not been given the greenlight to discuss it with you. Don't read too much into her actions - sometimes you're going to catch her off guard and it's not something she can discuss right then.

Have you received a performance evaluation in the last 60 days? Would you say the company values your employment or could 'live' without you?

The holidays is a stressful time for people and companies. The last quarter of the year can become gloomy and the trickle down effect becomes a vicious cycle. Make an appointment and sit down with your boss. Don't argue or pin her down - accept whatever answer, even vague ones, she gives you.

Get your resume/credentials in order. Set aside some time to make notes on the skills/tasks you have done on this job.

Be prepared, be professional...

In my line of work, we get laid off on payday if there is no government contract. We all know where the unemployment office is & which company has the work we need. We are like the last of the gypsies and have become very resourceful in procuring work. Find out what you have to do to collect unemployment. (They help you find another job, too) AND ask the boss where you stand so you don't get caught with your pants down. Especially if you have kids & a mtg. Don't play dumb, I'm sure there are others who are asking too. A simple "what are the chances of me being laid off" is all you have to do. Then get motivated.

Have a back up, like work at home type jobs. Then you can tell your boss to stick it. Check out http:www.freelancelistings.com
