How many cans of paint do you think it would take me to paint the walls in my 500 sq ft. studio apartment? I'm trying to predict how much it will cost me to do this. thanks for the help!

It should take you just one gallon of paint to cover 500 sq. feet - but that's stretching it. You would be better off getting 2 gallons. If price is an issue then get the one gallon first - see how you do and then you can always go back and get another gallon.

The one caveat to that is if you are super sensitive to color variation - if you are the type of person who notices very slight differences in color then get the two at first and mix them in a larger bucket. There are always slight differences of shade in different buckets of paint - even if they are the same color.

Another thing to think about is what color you are putting up - if it is different than the color that's there - you will need two coats for sure. If it's vastly different then you might need to prime and then put on two coats.

In figuring out your budget for your project don't forget to include the tape you'll need for the windows and any other fixtures you'll want to avoid getting paint on, rollers, brushes, paint tray, and drop clothes (you can use old sheets or something like that - just know that they will get paint on them and it won't come out).

It might seem like it takes forever - but a good prep job before you paint is essential! It will take so much less time to paint and you'll be much happier with the result.

Good luck! If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me through my profile - my husband and I have painted lots of rooms!

I assume you are talking about floor square footage and not wall square footage.

Assuming the walls are 10 feet and you have only four walls that are the same length, then one coat will use about 2 to 2-1/2 gallons. If you are going to paint the ceiling the same color you had better add another gallon for that.

Most paint says you can cover 400 to 500 square foot of surface but depending on the brand, color and how thick you put it on, that can vary.

Do you have standard 8 foot ceilings? If you do then you shouldn't need more than two gallon (of good paint sherwin williams, not cheap) The cheaper the paint the more coats you will have to put on. Are you covering over a dark color with a light color? You may want to get some primer, it will give you white walls to start with.

A 5 gal. bucket should be plenty unless you're going from light to dark or vice-versa - you'll need more. Also, don't buy the cheapest paint and roller covers.
