I believe this could mean the Word of God in many forms. If someone sent you a telegram, it could have been an angel, it could have been his thoughts, or God speaking to him. I believe it may have been in any form, remember if God is all knowing, all seeing, and made the world and things from thoughts that were not made of the material world then there you go! Most likely it could have been an angel or God speaking to him, or maybe even nature personified itself to speak whilst John was in the wilderness. However, some of this is truth and some conjecture. If you read John 3:2 it tells of Caesar and Herod and all the wickedness going on at that time, but more importantly, John was a prophet, baptiser, people of God have many gifts; therefore it was Gods word by inspiration, meaning God spoke to him in a special way! This was foretold, because John prepared the way for Jesus Christ to come into the world.

If you read on down you will see John was quoting words of Isaiah, the prophet. Although, some people refer to Jesus as the Word, and others say it's the will of God. But if you think about it, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the word of God would all be a form of God's will.

The "Word of God" as used in the passages that you are asking about refers to a specific message from God to John or from Jesus at that time.
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
Matthew 13:18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

They're not the only 2 with access to the "Word of God," and this wasn't/isn't the "original Word of God" as you put it. You're taking things out of context.
