Actually there is what is called a standard days ammo which was 200 rounds, 10 magazines of 20, but when went to 30 round mags for the M16 it was increased to 300, 10 magazines of 30. Not all 300 will be in magazines, usually 180 to 210, then the rest in stripper clips for reloading but smart and/or experienced get magazines and load them up. onesMost infantry will carry additional ammo since that is the key thing you need to survive but the standard is 300 rounds. Many will carry a pistol and some ammo for that but not as much since it is a last ditch use weapon, as long s you got a rifle use it-better stopping power and more accurate, and if a M60/240 is with the patrol some will carry extra ammo for it, being heavier ammo and the gun good to have with you you try to help the gun crew. In short you will carry the standard as a minimum and then add what you can as backup. Nothing in here is classified or Op Sec and is readily available in unclassified, readily available to the general public books/manuals. General infantry tactics and such planning information is also-do not let people screaming about Op Sec and so on get you worried; if you tread in that area you will know it and many people here that know or understand it will tell you that it is not a question they can answer. Short answer if he is smart is as much as he can above the standard and leave the camera's, video recorders and the rest of the unnecessary gear at base.

Depending on the mission and the unit increment that is patrolling, a grunt can carry just what he needs for his rifle to literally an entire pack full of ammo.

Typically, riflemen carry at least (6) 30 round magazines, plus several more boxes in his pack. So about 300 5.56 mm rounds. They usually also have a few grenades.

Additionally, for longer patrols, an infantry squad may split up the load of carrying rounds for the automatic weapons which can number in the thousands. There may even be some light anti-armor weapons on a few persons.

And then we get into weapons companies and weapons platoons... Loads of heavy-a$s weapons and tons of ammo.

It really depend on the individual soldiers' comfort level. There is always a trade off, firepower versus mobility. By having more firepower, you could achieve fire superiority quicker and take over the battlefield. However, having too much firepower limits the mobility of your troops. So it's always a trade off. A solider can carry as much as he thinks he can carry but he has to be able to catch up to his team. If he's the only guy on a fire team who had 1000 rounds of m16 ammo and it's slowing the whole team down, he becomes a liability. Usually people have 7 mags, 210 rds. However, there are people carrying twice that amount. It really comes to a trade off of mobility and firepower.

The Basic Load is 7 magazines (6 in pouches and one in the weapon) that's 210 rounds. A soldier CAN carry a lot more, probably 10 times that amount.

well for a m16 there can be 30 rounds in a clip,so if a soldier has space in his pouch,he may carry up to 8 to 10 clips, depending on his officer's decision and what missions he's going to do

I carry 210 rounds of 5.56mm and 60 rounds of 9mm. Then I sling a bandolier of 180 more rounds of 5.56 over the seat back of my M1114.

Well it all depends on your missions...me personally, i like to feel as in "GOD MODE'...i always carried more than the mission required. cause as an NCO, you have to stay back a few steps to let your junior marines be the tip of the spear...most Nco's in the marine corps, are lazy, and feel invicible, and eventually get complaisante..whcih then leads them in carrying just the bare minimum...6 magazines (they don't want to clean their rifles as much, so they can supervise their marines cleaning theirs)...
so, i'd always carried four magazine pouches of three each, and one in the rifle. and yes, even during long days in the field!
