For example, would it be possible to join for 2 years, and quit after that time? Also, do you have to sleep there, or can you stay home but go there on weekends / days off etc.

The minimum period of service for the PAF: varies depending upon your Air Force career but is generally at least four years for airmen and airwomen and six years for officers to repay the investment in your training.
.
This, of course, is a full-time job and you would be required to either live on the base you are stationed at or near-by...depending on your rank.
.
I think that what you are thinking of is the:

RAAF ACTIVE RESERVE (RAAFAR)

The RAAFAR provides trained Reserve personnel who will be available for operational deployment or associated support activities during a contingency. There are currently three Reserve Groups in the RAAF Active Reserve.

Contingency Operations Reserve Group (CORG)

The CORG provides a pool of Reserve personnel who, after necessary training provided by the Reserve, would be available in a contingency for operational deployment in the Area of Operations or to associated support activities. The CORG comprises Active Reserve personnel, who serve in non-flying duties. The annual commitment is 32 days per year.

Ground Defence Reserve Group (GrDefRG)

The GRDefRG is the dedicated ground combat element of the Air Force Reserve. Members of the GRDefRG are trained to a level that allows them to be deployed at short notice in a Defence Contingency. The minimum annual training commitment is 50 days per year.

Operational Aircrew Reserve Group (OARG)

The OARG provides a pool of ex-Permanent Air Force (PAF) aircrew who are employed by PAF units for flying duties and whose readiness would allow immediate employment in a contingency. The annual training commitment varies between OARG aircrew and is dependent on the aircrew category and the aircraft type. This commitment comprises a minimum of 32 days per year plus an additional number of days, which is stipulated by the appropriate operational authority, to allow the OARG member to maintain the required minimum levels of flying categorisation and currency.

You sign a contract and then it depends on the duties that you will be assigned once you complete your training, if not on duty and outside of working hours you will be allowed off base once you get a pass.
Work in the military is very regimented and work periods constantly being arranged and re arranged.
If you join as a regular there is more to it than just working at weekends.

it's hard to answer if you wanted to fly because we only have two aircraft and one is having a oil change and new plugs and points so there is a waiting list to fly good luck
