Fishingidiot covered it nicely.

Depends on what type of fishing. I mean trolling or salt water fishing for Marlin can be a bit complex for the novice.
But if you are fishing off the bank of a river or lake for, say catfish or bass its easy. You have a fishing pole with a casting reel, fishing line with a hook and weight. Run the hook through the bait (worm, minnow, stink bait, what ever) and then gently cast it out into the water. For top water fish you can use a bobber attached to your line a couple feet above your hook and weight. When the bobber goes under you give a sharp pull on the line and real in the fish. Bottom fishing is the same basically but with out the bobber. When you feel the fish pull against your rod or you see your rod tip tug down you pull back and real in the fish.
Pretty simple, my 5 year old granddaughter mastered bottom fishing for flounder in a 1/2 hour or so.
With children I would advise tying a strong string to the pole and to something solid so rod and reel wont end up in the lake

Larry took my answer. It's as simple as you make it. Start off bluegill and bass fishing from shore.
Requirements:
Rod (stick or cane pole)
Reel (optional)
hook
bait (worms, corn, dough, bread)
Chair (stump or rock)
Fishing buddy (optional)

Let the complications progress when or if you get more involved. It can stay as simple as you like for as long as you like. Happy fishing!

It is only as complex as one lets it be. You can go out with a stick with a piece of line on it, a hook (maybe even an open clothes pin) on the line and a little piece of corn, a worm, etc. and catch a fish. Or you could go out, buy a boat with a 300 horse outboard, blow thousands of dollars on rods, reels, and lures, and memerise moon-phases, high tide times, high pressure system effects, ect. and catch fish.

fishing idiot is an idiot, first you need to get a cheap rod and reel then ask the person who you bought it from where to take the cheap rod and reel to go catch a fishy. Act all cute and flirt a little bit he will undoubtedly give you his secrets cuz most fisherman are horny! Then go there and catch some fish. WEST SIDE! GOOD LUCK

The easiest way to get started is to hold your head underwater till a fish swims in your mouth and than grab it with youe teeth. No investment needed, just some patience

tie one end of a string to a stick. Tie the other end of the string to a hook. Bait the hook. throw it in the water and wait. Alot of waiting but it's pretty easy.

It's pretty easy once you get everything. Let me get you started on Saltwater fishing. Since that is what I mainly do.
So #1 you have to get a spin-cast combo, (spin-cast is the easiest to use) here check out this link for a website that you can get a combo. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0043392121822a&navCount=8&podId=0043392&parentId=cat20287&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat20287&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20287&hasJS=true
Also if this combo doesn't come with line get this it is the best! Almost no friction and it's braided! http://www.powerpro.com/purchase/store/subcategories.asp?PP_CART_SUBCATEGORY_ID=7

#2 you will need a tackle box. You can get one of these almost anywhere.. Walmart, Target, Online, ETC. Here is a link for one. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=&id=0042908121898a&navCount=11&podId=0042908&parentId=cat600035&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat600035&hasJS=true

#3 you will need some tackle to put in there. Weights (check your local mom-and-pop tackle shop for good suggestions on weights) Maby some bobbers check out this link. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=&id=0036747318789a&navCount=15&podId=0036747&parentId=cat20289&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20289&hasJS=true
Some hooks. Preferably circle hooks. Check out this link for hooks. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0030277115055a&navCount=18&podId=0030277&parentId=cat20291&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat20176-cat20291&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20291&hasJS=true
Some leader line. Check out this link for good quality leader line. http://www.triplefish.net/triple_fish_red_50yd_wrist_spool.html
Also some swivels to attach leader line to your main line easily. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0000017112551a&navCount=21&podId=0000017&parentId=cat20293&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat20176-cat20293&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20293&hasJS=true
Also a bait bucket. Check out this link for a good place for bait buckets. http://www.frabill.com/cgi-bin/frabill/1405?store=spring
And that should be good on terminal tackle.

#4 how to cast. Go to http://www.fishingidiots.com and scroll down for resources on the left side taskbar. And there is a good section for everything I just said.

#5 Have fun. Hope this helped? Sorry for it being so long. Have a great holiday season!
