Alexander was great. Was he a just and moral man by our standards? maybe not so much, but are we to place our standards on the ancient greeks? What Alexander brought to his empire was actually cultural awareness. Alexander would conquer, then let the local peoples govern as they were accustomed to. From what is now Albania, down to Egypt, and all the way to India he never lost a battle. He married foreign women, and had his officers do the same so that the children could "inherit" his kingdom as he said. He paved the way for Buddhism and Christianity and, if for nothing else, he founded the great city of Alexandria in Egypt. With its great library, it was the center of knowledge in the ancient world. Actually, Alexander's rule was quite popular to most. One story is that as when he pushed into India, the governors he left in Persia became corrupt. Upon returning, Alexander let any citizen bring any charge against any official who had wronged them. I mean there is so much to be said about Alex, but truth be told, he was great and advanced human civilization further by leaps and bounds. Some even say he was the greatest man in history.

As we are used to call tyrannic and dangerous people great if they are rulers, people who cause death, hatred, and destruction, it would be unjust to leave him out. In this regard he was the first of the really great ones. And they are not even to blame for that - we, the others, call those characters "great".
