Christians are protesting because the author of the book that the movie is based on is a self professed atheist, who believes that organized religion is evil. The book series is intended as an allegory for the evils of religion, in fact God himself is an antagonist in the story. The Magesterium, the a villainous organization in the story, is an allegory for the Church. Even in the title of the series, His Dark Materials, Pullman makes God out to be evil. However, it is a fantasy story, that is, it cannot force a religious person to hate God, so there is nothing to fear from it. And it is a Damned Good Book, one of my favorites. The movie is fantastic, go see it just for the fighting polar bears if not for all the other amazing scenes. The plot follows the book very closely, but leaves out large portions , so the movie is a little cryptic and it helps to read the book first so you know the story, but I saw it with friends who knew nothing about the book, and they loved the movie.

What is the objection to this movie? Nobody ever states the specific objection points, just generic Hollywood bashing.

I just saw the movie tonight (90 minutes ago) and thought it was wonderful. I intend to read the trilogy of books and am confident they have a sequel already in the can. I never would have considered seeing the movie were it not for all the vicious rhetoric spewed here on Yahoo! Answers. Thank you for your kind recommendations, Christians!

I don't see what all the fuss is about. It says nothing against Christianity but does infer that controlling the young ones is wrong. Do you have a problem with someone objecting to controlling others (suggesting they should be released from slavery of thought and action)? The movie suggests that Free Will is a good thing.

Oh, drink!

May be we should all protest when they put 'The Life of Christ' or 'The Ten Commandments' of TV again.

Oh well! that wont happen because Atheists ant that intolerant to others beliefs.

Also - I wonder if some Christian groups have shares in the film because it will boost the takings big time.

The movie is not a "threat to Christianity". The Christian Church is here to stay, and will never be defeated. The problem is that many unsuspecting people will be deceived by the atheistic view that Pullman is pushing.

I am not going to the movie. Why give money to an atheist who is thumbing his nose at God? I'm not "boycotting" anything. I prefer to do something more meaningful than watch a movie about a little girl who is a compulsive liar. I read the books. They were a waste of time.

By the way--those of you who say this is "just a movie" are deluding yourselves. It's a vehicle for Pullman to push his atheistic views on an unsuspecting public. It's Pullman's agenda.

Although I couldn't care less what the Christians are doing, I think I'll wait for it to come out on video. There are other movies I'd rather see on the big screen.

Wouldn't mind reading the books though.

If you like the fantasy genre, such as Narnia and Lord of the Rings, you will find things about the Golden Compass to like. If you do not like the genre, don't waste your time.

I hadn't even heard of it until I heard Christians were protesting, now I want to see it. What a great way to get free publicity.
