That is an interesting question.
I do think there are so many contributing factors.
Due to electronics, we are so inactive.
Portions today are huge compared to what we ate when I was young.
So many young people today are raised to never hear NO.
One of my personal beliefs is that sooner, but since now is already later, it will be discovered that the additives to our foods a contributing to our girth growth.
The beef, pork and fowl all get growth hormones to speed their weight gain for market, then we eat the meat. Doesn't that make sense?
It does seem like the FDA never looks at this as a possibility.
Of course our schools have eliminated daily sports for every child, so they are not burning off calories and frustration. When things do not go exactly their way, (we used to burn it off through sports activities) they have no outlet and cannot deal with it.
Well, I have shared enough opinions. HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY SEASON.

I believe people(adults) are fat because their work never gives them any vacation time off. When you do have time off it is still not your own personal time it's time to catch up on family matters. So all do is constantly nothing but work and everything else you don't find that enjoyable. Eating something that tastes good feels like the only vacation you're going to get. Sure you can tell me there are ways to eat healthy and taste good, but unless you have a professional chef on hand to create these kind of healthy goodies, you're just going to rip into a bag of chips or M&M's and call it a day.

It's hard to say. I'm overweight, so I suppose I lack control in that area of my life, but it's not fair to say I lack complete self control. I make myself do things all the time...I'm a straight A student!
When I was little, my dad was often out of town on business so it was easier for my mom to buy me a happy meal than cook a nutritious one. I'm still figuring out how to eat healthy. My parents never ate healthy when I was little or exercised with me.
I'm turning it around and I know what I will and won't do with my own children. It's not very nice to look down on people with a weight problem, esp. if you have never walked in their shoes.

I know I am!
actually, all of your other answerers have touched on good points in regard to lack of self-control and weight.
I think, though, that self-control, patience, and discipline are 3 things that are among the hardest to learn in this life. With them, we wouldn't be fat, angry, frustrated. we'd learn what it was that we wanted to learn, we'd all find following our respective religious codes to be very easy, maybe to the point of not needing them written down???
Most diet plans tell us that dieting starts in the head, but I think we can apply that idea to any and every venue we choose to pursue.
