So many people these days are confusing biblical creationism with intelligent design. "Intelligent Design is the study of patterns in nature that are best explained as the result of intelligence" (Dr. William Dembski). That's it; it says nothing of who the creator is and how he/she/it/they did it. Intelligent Design encompasses every "creation" story, even aliens seeding life on this planet.
Although it has been around, in one form or another, since the time of ancient Greece, William Paley is probably the most famous for using the design argument. In 1802, he came out with a treatise called Natural Theology. He began by arguing that if one were to discover a watch lying in the middle of nowhere and they were to examine that watch closely, the person would logically conclude that it was not an accident, but had purpose; it had a designer. He went on to argue that the overwhelming design in the universe is evidence of a Grand Designer.

When you see a house, does it appear to be something that just fell together, or rather, something that was well planned? A small microscopic organism is much more complicated than any house, or even an entire apartment complex. A human is many times over more complex than that organism... And, each of them had to have been designed, due to the very nature of the finished 'product'. The order, the energy, the complexity... These are all things that require intelligence. Thus, Intelligent Design.

"You alone, Jehovah, are the God above all other gods in supreme charge of all the earth." (Psalms 83:18)
This is the Creator / Designer...

Inteligent Design is the idea that you can determine whether something was designed by an intelligent agent or not. Simple as that. While creationists love it because they think it proves the existence of God, the theory itself has nothing to do with God or creationism.

The appeal of ID is that, having abandoned the need for an empirically testable explanation, one is free to choose the designer of one's choice to satisfy the demands of one's religion. I'm a Pastafarian, so I believe The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the Designer. The Church of the FSM will battle any school board that refuses to give FSM-ID equal time in the biology classroom to non-FSM-ID and Darwinian Evolution. 1/3 time for each or we sue!

Science is built on the concept of theory. A theory is model to explain or predict natural phenomena and is capable of being tested or disproven through a process of falsification.
The reason Intelligent Design is neither theory nor science is because it lacks falsifiability.
For a brief introduction to theory, see Wikipeida (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory ). Please do NOT assume Wikipedia is a credible source for all knowledge. I use Wikipedia as a starting point to gain a general understanding of a subject and then move on to other credible sources to learn more about the subject matter.
Check out this lovely diorama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CreationMuseum15.png ) in the Creation Museum (http://arstechnica.com/articles/culture/ars-takes-a-field-trip-the-creation-museum.ars ) showing Eve sitting in a very sexy frock next to an over sized velociraptor.
I also love the photo of a parent boosting his child onto a saddled tricertops (http://media.arstechnica.com/news.media/400/526893292_e95eb57c10.jpg ).

Intelligent design is a coined term that softly refers to God. It's kind of a way to admit that you believe in God publicly w/o getting into a religious discussion. It sort of spun from the biblical passage that "only a fool says there is no God" - because if you look into the world you see intricacies and phenomenons that blow our minds away.

Creationism in a cheap tuxedo.
After the ID gang was blown out of the water in the Kitzmiller vs. Dover Trial of 2005, the Discovery Institute, which came up with the phrase, is pushing a new one: Sudden Emergence.
Coming to a rightwing fundie schoolboard near you.
Still creationism, Bible Style.

I see myself as an example of inelegant design. :(
If God exists, I would like some explanation regarding his drawings for my sinuses. My face doesn't drain properly and I want to know if there's a recall.

Refers to God the Creator. The logical answer is a Creator and so he used his intelligence to design mankind.
As opposed to mankind being brought forth though a voo-doo process called "Natural Selection."
Btw, bigirv@, didn't some idiot dream up evolution? I think so.
