If he's only tied up when you sleep then I don't think it's much of a problem. If the dog gets to run around in the day and gets taken for walks then it should be fine to be confined for those hours at night. My dogs are put in the laundry at night, they tend to sleep through and probably don't have much more room than your dog tied up.
It's great that you have your dog in with you (I'm sure he loves being with his family!) and he's a clever boy asking when he needs to go out. He sounds well loved, I wouldn't worry too much. Working dogs are often tied up for periods of time and they do OK.

Here is my opinion for you. I have a 7 yr old pitbull boxer dog as well. At first, she was an outside dog until I started making her being a inside dog. I think that at night, you should have the baby inside with you so that he can feel the love that you show him whenever you walk him or play with him. The baby could be BOTH a inside and outside dog. I allow my dog to be outside when its very cool but when its hot, I always keep her inside the house especially inside my bedroom where she sleeps at night. Don't make the 6 month old puppy suffer with this heat by keeping him outside even though he has food and water and everything else.

I put my wolves on a tie down, when I have new company they've never met. Even though everyone wants to meet my beauties, they all appreciate the dogs being secure. They don't ever stay on a tie down. Just the few times I have new company over.
What your referring to, is terribly cruel. Not the sleeping thing, but dogs on a tie down in yards. Building a proper fence, is a necessary expense for dogs. Especially outside dogs.

I don't like to see a dog tied either if you have him inside it is only common sense that he will go occasionally inside remember to feed him on a schedule and take him out 20 minutes later and don't feed between and he will go outside you must keep taking him 20 minutes after he eats and don't leave food down and he will be as close to house trained as one can get .

Sure, I feel bad for those dogs too!
I have family that also does this indoors, they rarely get tied up outside, but never in the winter. They seem ok with it, but I still think I feel sorry for them.

Well, it's better than having him outdoors in the cold -- or worse yet, running around loose outdoors where he could get hit by a car.
As long as he has room to move around a bit, and is able to get a drink and a snack, and has a washable rug to lie down on, I think it's OK. Oh, and you *do* let him loose and take him on walks, right? Give him a love when you feel bad. I think he'll be OK.
