If all other important requirements are met (such as height/reach, language/communication, age, educational, physical, etc.) but I don't have perfect vision ("20/20 eyesight"), can I still apply as or become a flight attendant for a major airline? Is it really required? I wear clear contact lenses that enable me to see clearly. Is this OK?

No, its not necessary to have 20/20.
I wear contact lense also.

Tip:

1.) Be Friendly to everyone on the interview coz from there they wil judge you.

2.) Have a whole body picture in formal attire.

3.) Aside from your requirements, knows how to swim is part of it.

I wear glasses and I was a F/A for 13 years.

It only has to be corrected to 20/20. Logically, you should be able to negotiate around the aircraft in poor lighting without your glasses but they wont test for that.

I'm just saying that for practical reasons.

Be aware that contacts are allowed but long hours in the air can irratate eyes and dry them out. Airplane air is very dry.

One girl in my class had very bad eyesight and she still passed!
