I have a close relative who is being brainwashed by her husband and I need to know if I have any rights "as a sister?" She is suicidal and having a serious nervous breakdown. The details I am nervous to expose online. Feel free to to email me.

Can I have her committed if my mom or dad calls? How? They would.

Not without being a guardian of her. You can call the police for her suicide attempt - that is against the law and they will commit her for that. But involuntarily, no - there is nothing you can do unless she tries to hurt herself or someone else and you can convince the police to help.

You can petition to have your sister involuntarily committed for up to 72 hours if she is truely suicidal. If she has made a specific threat to you such as "I want to kill myself." If she has made a specific threat to you then call 911. Make sure you meet the police and the ambulance at her house so that you can be there as a witness. Leave out the problems about her husband "brainwashing" her when you do this as it will make you appear that you just don't like her husband. You must be willing to sign all of the paperwork at the hospital also so you will be required to go with her. But, if your sister does not admit to what she has said, and she does a good job talking to the doctor and acts appropriately she may be discharged because it will be a "he said, she said" situation. Be prepared for an ugly scene, especially if she is unwilling to go through this. It may ruin your relationship with her and it might backfire on you. You need to be confident that she wants help and that she will not lie about the situation.

This is a very difficult situation. I can understand that you are concerned for your sister.

I have seen situations where a woman is being controlled by an over-controlling male partner who uses a variety of verbal abuse, financial abuse and possibly even physical abuse (or the threat of it) to control her behaviour. Some of these are domestic violence situations and some have been actual brainwashing scenarios.

The difficulty is that it is hard to get the woman to get away from the man.

Some of your options include:

Talking with one or both of them (this generally doesn't work - but maybe talking with your sister might help her to see sense and getout of there)

Bringing your sister to see a doctor and explaining the situation to them - perhaps they might be able to arrange a detention order (or whatever they call it where you are) - some sort of order under the Mental Health laws where your sister gets put into a psychiatric facility.

Kidnapping your sister - this is illegal and not to be recommended. However, some people have resorted to this in the past.

If she won't listen to you, legally, there isn't much you can do. If you think she's being brainwashed, you need to get as many friends and family as you can on board and perform an active intervention (preferably when he isn't home). Other than that, if she won't listen, or go, with you, it's (unfortunately for you) her legal right to do what she wants. If he has threatened her physically in your presence, however, that may be a different story. Check the laws in your state regarding threatening and domestic violence. Good luck and my prayers are with you.

If you truly feel she is suicidal...talk to a doctor, he can commit her. Or at the very least, direct you to people who can help. Best of luck.
