'cello (short for "violincello") is played sitting down, with the instrument between the knees: e.g., Yo-Yo Ma is an international recording artist on cello.

Bass is played standing up -- it's a MUCH bigger stringed instrument -- though sometimes bass players will sit on bar stools.

Sometimes they sit on bar stools while playing, as well. :)

My God, what answers so far ! A Double Bass is the largest of the string instruments and because of its size sounds the lowest notes - hence "bass"! A cello - actually called a"Violoncello" is the next size up from the double bass, and is the third largest in the normal string instrument section of an orchestra (the others being the violin - top range of notes, then the viola - a bit bigger and sounds normally an octave lower). Whereas the violin and viola are held "under the chin", the 'Cello stands upright on the floor and the player sits almost astride it 'from the rear'- with one knee on each side of the instrument. Being the third in the 'family' it also sound another octave below the viola, and the double-bass stands upright as does its player. Just so that nothing gets lost in "translation"(!) an octave is eight notes up or down from wherever you start, and all of the strings can be either plucked or bowed.

RE:

There are 4 main "voices" in every instrument class. Soprano ( violin, coronet, piccolo) alto ( viola, trumpet, flute), baraton( cello, euphonium, clarinet) and bass ( bass, tuba, sax) the cello plays the baritone range for the strings and the bass plays the bass.
These are very general ranges. Its more detailed but if you dont know the diff between a cello and bass you are not ready for more details.

A cello is larger and must be played sitting down. Are you talking about a bass or bass violin, as in a viola? A bass is about 6 ft and must be played standing up and a viola is a bit larger than the violin and it goes lower than violins

Voice range. Think of one as a bass and a baritone.
