Interesting question... However, don't expect to get any interesting answers from the neo-atheists...

It's been a curiosity of mine for a long time why self professed atheists use the name of one who they hate or say doesn't exist like it was a swear word. But you never hear anyone say something like "Oh Gandhi", or "Oh Hitler", or Oh, Buddha, or some other pseudo deity.

I've come to believe that it is because they know that Jesus Christ is real, but they "hate Him without a cause" and need to express their contempt for Him.

This goes along with the fact that there are really no atheists at all. Romans 1 says that "they are without excuse". In other places God calls them fools. "The fool has said in their heart, 'there is no God".

It's a meaningless saying which is often used by god-botherers as well. It could refer to any god.
I think it was either Batman or Robin who used to say Holy Smoke but I don't supposed they believed that cigarettes were divine.

Because "Oh your god" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

I've also sworn in Zeus's name before, but I don't believe in Zeus either.

I dont, thankyou very much. And for those that do, it's one of those general sayings that the general population says no matter what they believe in. Just like Bless You means absoulty nothing to do with religion these days. Why do christians shot out "JESUS CHRIST!".... aren't you insulting your hero?

What's with this question? It's popped up quite a few times today.

I am free to use your gods name in vain.
Ex-Christian

Actually, I never say that.

They have valid reasons and hence the right to say so.You see,but for the God,they wouldn't have been atheists.Think and rethink, what it means. If agreed, please tell others.

Oh we mean nothing by it. Really, when we say god, we mean nothing.

Like what Joe said, it is a meaningless saying.

Basically it's just like the word "soulmate". A soulmate is just someone that you have found to be in compatible with in a relationship. It has nothing to do with souls.
