The 80GB version requires an update from the PlayStation Store to have backward compatibility.

The reason your PS3 wont play PS2 games is most likely because you have the 40GB PS3. The 40GB PS3 is the only PS3 that doesn't play PS2 games. All of the other PS3's are backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.

Try using a lint free cloth to clean the PS3, but I'm not sure if any of the scratches can be removed.

EDIT: O.k., the 80GB PS3 is compatible with PS2 games, but it just can't play as many PS2 games as the 20GB & 60GB PS3. I have the 60GB version, so about all PS1 and PS2 games will work with it. For some PS2 games to work with the 80GB PS3 you will need to make sure that the PS3 is updated to the current update version.

Try updating your 80GB PS3 to the current software version and then try to play that particular PS2 game. If it still doesn't work after updating it, then the 80GB PS3 isn't compatible with it.

1). If you have 40GB version - you won't be able to play PS2 games at all. The best ones for PS2 games - 20GB and 60GB NTSC versions. 80GB plays PS2 games too, but the amount is smaller.
2). Scratches - http://youtube.com/watch?v=rfT9qfVkVQM
