hi hillbilly, I have Crohn's disease which is similar to Ulcerative Colitis. It is a form of IBD (inflammatory bowel disease).
Diet will vary in each person. What one can tolerate well, the other may not. If you go to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America website, they have information there regarding diet, exercise, the latest treatments, surgery, etc.
They also have a hotline and a live chat that is run by healthcare professionals who are well versed in IBD M-F 9 am - 5 pm (EST). You can contact these folks and get the answers you've been looking for.
If you click on events & chapters on the left side of the webpage, then click on the state you live in, the nearest chapter near you will show up. CCFA has support groups as well as educational meetings that have dieticians, drug reps, colorectal surgeons, as well as ostomates who have been cured of UC.
Be sure that you are not smoking or drinking b/c it will interfere with your treatments.Taking any type of hormonal birthcontrol & having IBD tends to increase the risk of clots when flaring. The blood becomes sticky in a flare & it increases the risk more than 50%.
Make sure to keep your GI appts, ask questions, get to know your pharmacist because they will be your first defense when you have medications questions & your MD is not in the office, eat right when you can, and if you are in any pain, ask for something for relief.
I can truly understand what you are going through. It takes a while to come to terms with IBD, but once you get the right dose of treatment, remission isn't too far away.
I should mention that you can meet with a registered dietician at a hospital. They are trained to deal with all sorts of different illnesses & specific diets that go with it. I provided a link to the American Dietician Association in case you want to find someone close to you instead of going to a hospital. I always request one whenever I am hospitalized and then I get a list of what to avoid and ideas for meals plans for a week.
