All times are based on UTC - Universal Time
Eastern Standard Time in the USA is UTC-5, that is five hours behind UTC.
You don't say where in Australia you are. There are six different time zones operating in Australia because of daylight saving time. The various zones, the States using them and the time difference to EST USA are as follows:
Western Standard Time is UTC + 8 and is therefore USA EST plus 13.
Western Daylight Saving Time, currently operational in WA, is UTC + 9, thus EST + 14
Central Standard Time, currently operational in the NT, is UTC + 9.5, this EST + 14.5
Central Daylight Saving Time, currently operational in SA, is UTC + 10.5, thus EST + 15.5
Eastern Standard Time, currently operational in Queensland, is UTC + 10, thus EST + 15
Eastern Daylight Saving Time, NSW Vic ACT Tas, is UTC + 11, thus EST + 16.
From that, if it is 5.30pm on Saturday in New York it is Sunday in Australia and the times are
Perth 7.30am
Darwin 8am
Brisbane 8.30am
Adelaide 9am
Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart 9.30am

The time right now in EST is 1:21 am on Sunday.
They are 16 hours behind you.
So 5:30 pm EST will be 9:30 am on the following day for you.

I'm slightly confused here
I do live in Australia and the question was posted about 8 minutes ago - except that it's Sunday here, about 5.30 in the afternoon (on the East coast) so I don;t quite see how it could be Saturday for you ......
unless you aren't in Australia .....
update - I've just discovered that there is EST in Australia and EST in America (New York etc) and EST USA is currently 16 hours behind EST Aus
and its still Sunday !
