Linux is a free operationg system
Microsoft XP or Vista are the other competing Operating systems. The cost money and do not change often.
Lunux has armies of poeple working on the operating system all the time and even larger armies building applications to work on the platform.
You can use Microsoft and Microsoft like products on Linux.
RedHat is the best right now. They have a strong relationship with IBM, Google and Microsoft.

1. its free
2. almost all its software is free
3. it has no virtually no ad-ware, malware, and very few virus threats
4. it looks great
5. you have many more interface (desktop) options than windows or osx. There are at least 4 really powerful desktops and highly configurable for linux and a number of more specialised ones any of which can be easily interchanged each time you log in. In short, it can have a brilliant interface depending on which desktop you use and how you set it up.
6. its interesting to use, and offers a lot of opportunities for learning (ie, its not just 'point and click' like other mainstream os's)
7. there's an awesome support community of people who will help out if you get into trouble with it

CONS
1. it is more difficult to use than other mainstream os's
2. you have to work on it in order to set it up on a lot of machines
3. the software is often (but not always!) not as good quality as other mainstream freeware applications (most notable for win xp). This is not the same as saying that linux software is poor quality which would be patently WRONG to make as an assertion. Just that there are a lot more freeware applications for Windoze and a lot of them are better developed than linux applications.

If you are prepared to put in the time to learn how to use it, and don't want to play games, then linux is a brilliant operating system. If you are a serious gamer, or a 'point and clicker', Linux probably won't appeal

Linux is great! It is difficult, so people who are kinda clueless don't mess with it. Instead they ask dorky questions on the internet.

No advantages and there is nothing great about it and DamnSmallLinux is the best.
