Move all the furniture aside - make sure there is no danger of them hurting themselves.

Call an ambulance

The idea of giving them sugar is only a good one if they are diabetic and having a hypoglycaemic episode. It is, in fact, a bad idea to put anything in the mouth of someone having a seizure of any sort.

When the fit passes do the usual ABC thing. They are usually quite sleepy at this stage (although some people might wake up promptly).

Shake and shout "I am a first aider!". That'd make ANYONE wake up if they knew what was coming next! :-)

In most cases, people who have just had a convulsion WILL NOT need Basic Life support (see the drill below). However, in a few cases you might need to do this:

ABCD
(A)irway - check to make sure their airway is okay. If need be, do jaw thrust or chin lift to open the airway - clear objects out of mouth (they aren't likely to bite at this stage)

(B)reathing - check to see if they are taking breaths by themselves. If not - give 2 breaths (see the artificial respiration wiki page)

(C)irculation - check to see if they have a pulse. If no pulse - commence CPR.

(D)efibrillator - if there is an automatic defibrillator available, you might like to use it at this stage once CPR has started.

NEVER put something into the mouth of someone having a seizure!!!!
Stay calm, protect them from dangers by moving furniture out of the way, and I wouldn't touch them unless you've had first aid training or been instructed to by an emergency operator. Call 911.

Call 911, Make sure they can't injure themselves by hitting into objects that are close by and wait with them till the ambulance arrives.
