Ok, recently one of my relatives got pregnant, but something was wrong with the baby, therefore she got an abortion. I forget what was wrong with the baby, but my mum told me that happened because my relative has a dog (or that's what she said the doctor said).. anyway I looked on yahoo answers and some people say it's safe to have a dog around during pregnancy.. so.. is it or isn't it? Was what happened to my relative rare?

Thanks for your answers, I'm now starting to think IF it was her dog, then it must have been a very rare thing to happen.

It's perfectly safe to have a dog during pregnancy. I've never heard anything about dogs causing pregnancy complications, and I'm not sure what kind of doctor would say that!
The only thing pet-related I've heard, is about pregnancy and litter boxes.

No, this isn't true... I have two dogs myself and some 'anti-dog' people in my family told me to kick the dogs out as they'll harm me, or later the baby. My doctor told me there's not danger what-so-ever in keeping dogs. If she has allergies the hair may cause a problem, but overall dog hair isn't such a good thing to inhale (whether you're pregnant or not) so just vacuum the hair on a regular basis and enjoy your doggies. If they have bad habits, now is the best time to get it out of them. If you try to do this when the baby's born they may associate the baby with the new training and resent it. They are great for stress relieve anyway, and studies have shown that ppl who keep pets have less heart problems and lower stress levels... they do more good than harm :))

I have never heard of a baby being affected by the mother being around a dog but a baby can be affected by the mother being around cats, or rather their litter boxes. The feces can carry a "bug" that can cause toxemia which can affect the unborn baby. That's why it is important for pregnant women to stay away from litter boxes.

There is not one shred of evidence that having a dog around during pregnancy does any harm at all. Perhaps your mum mis-heard what the doctor said.

dogs are fine. i have two babies and three dogs.. it's the kitty box that you have to be careful about. - do you know exactly what your relative had? it could have been genetic, or maybe they just really don't want anyone to know the truth. it's got to be a very tough situation for them.

don't know. when i was pregnant, my dogs acted like i was a "pod person from mars". they would sniff me and then walk away. weren't playful with me like normal. they knew it was me, just sensed something different about me and wasn't sure.
